Kefalonia is one of Greece’s largest islands, and with a laid-back, warm temperatures, quiet vibe, it is the perfect destination for a relaxing holiday with toddlers.
In just 3.5 hours, your family can be landing in Kefalonia from the UK, and if you didn’t already get a sneak peek out of the plane windows, you’ll be landing in sheer paradise.

Beautiful sandy beaches, warm turquoise water, and an abundance of natural beauty is what will greet you in Kefalonia, and if you’re planning on taking your little ones along for the ride, you’ve come to the right place.
This article is going to cover some of the top things to do in Kefalonia with kids to help you can get a feel for the island and plan your holiday before even arriving.

Best Things To Do In Kefalonia With Toddlers: Relax on the beach

The beaches in Kefalonia are picture-perfect and worthy of being on a postcard thanks to their soft white sand (which is red on some beaches) that is accompanied by the clear turquoise water that laps up onto it.
Beaches make the perfect day out for toddlers, especially if you have a bucket and spade in tow and some shade. Not only are they free, but your little one can have a whale of a time splashing about in the shallows and playing in the sand.
Most beaches on the island are child friendly, but there are some that stand out above the rest. I’ve put together an entire article on the Best Beaches in Kefalonia for Families so you can get a better idea of which ones are accessible and which are worth visiting.

Boat through the caves of Melissani Lake
Whether you have a slightly older toddler or an older child as well as a toddler, then a boat ride through the caves of the Melissani Lake will surely be a hit. We used our baby carrier to keep a wriggly little one contained.

Many tour companies on the island will arrange to pick you up and drop you off at your hotel, and from there, you will head to the lake before jumping on a paddle boat. The boat ride will take you on a full circle of the lake, as well as through the back of the cave, and along to see the stalagmites and other sights that the cave has to offer.
What’s even better is the tour is inexpensive, and as the cave boasts a cool temperature, it is a fantastic activity on days when high temperatures are predicted.
See Loggerhead Turtles in the Argostoli Harbour
If you’re early risers, which I’m sure you are if you’re parents to a toddler, then head down to the Argostoli Harbour to see Loggerhead Turtles snap up scraps of discarded fish from the fisherman’s catch of the day.
Alternatively, there are boat tours from Argostoli that you can take part in. The tour will take you out and give you the opportunity to see the turtles as well as dolphins that call the waters surrounding Kefalonia home.
Best Things To Do In Kefalonia With Toddlers: Head off on a hike
Hiking may not be everyone’s cup of tea, but if you’re a particularly active family, then you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the trails you can hike along while visiting Kefalonia. I highly recommend bringing your baby carrier along with you because although some of the trails are of an easy to moderate level, your little one will need a break eventually.
Some of the best hikes in Kefalonia include:
- The ridge of Mount Ainos – Moderate
- The Cypress Trail – Moderate
- Antisamos Beach to Koutsoupia Beach – Moderate
- Mount Ainos Summit – Moderate
- Fteri Beach – Easy
- Argostoli Bay Walk – Easy
Have a picnic in the Mount Ainos National Park
If you decide to hike Mount Ainos, or if you just need an extra activity to fill an afternoon in Kefalonia, then you should take a picnic to the Mount Ainos National Park.
Mount Ainos is Kefalonia’s tallest mountain, and its National Park, which stretches over 3,000 hectares, has an abundance of picnic spots with incredible views of the mountain, the Ionian Sea, and the surrounding vegetation.
Best Things To Do In Kefalonia With Toddlers: Spend the day at the Ionian Sea Hotel water park
My little ones love the water, and if your toddler is anything like them, you can fill an entire day of your holiday just by hanging out at the pool.
While on holiday, swimming really is a win-win for everyone involved because not only will your toddler have an amazing time splashing about, but they’ll also sleep incredibly well, which you’ll be more than thankful for come the end of the day.
With that in mind, the Ionian Sea Hotel may just be one of the best hotels in Kefalonia because of its aqua park that features five waterslides, an aqua bar, 2 adult swimming pools, and a pool specifically designed for kids and toddlers.
Visit the animals in the Odysseus Zoo Land
The Odysseus Zoo Land is an adorable little zoo filled with rare animals and birds that are native to Kefalonia. There are also numerous exhibits that depict Greek history making the zoo an informative and fun day out for the entire family.
At the time of this writing, however, Odysseus Zoo Land is temporarily closed, but it’s best to check their website before your trip for any updates.
