Planning a camping trip to France but not sure where to start looking? We’ve asked families who regularly visit family campsites in France for their favourite campsites and discover what family friendly facilities are available. Some have onsite waterparks, are close to the beach or are simply brilliant with kids. All you need to do is decide which campsite, whether to pack up the car with the kids camping chairs etc or to hire a car and fly over.

Le Vieux Port, in Messanges in Landes

This large 5 star family campsite has 7 pools and water slides with direct access to the beach, a view of the dunes, a 30-hectare pine forest and the biggest entertainment hall. The water park has two outdoor pools, an indoor heated pool, waterslides for both children and parents, and children’s paddling pools plus a spa for adults. Eurocamp La Chapelle, Langedoc, France

La Vallee in Houlgate Le Valle

A perfect location on the ‘Côte Fleurie’, by car: The Camping is 2 mins. from the beach and the town centre, 5 mins. from Cabourg and 15 mins. from Deauville, and is located in the pretty seaside resort of Houlgate in Calvados. Camping Village La Vallée is a comfortable, peaceful and family-friendly campsite, just 1000m from the seaside.

You will enjoy the shady, flower-filled site covering 12 hectares; the valley location with magnificent views over the sea and the town of Houlgate; and the traditional Normandy-style buildings.

Sequoia Park

Surrounded by fields of sunflowers and vineyards, there is plenty of space onsite in the grounds of Château de la Josephtrie. The château’s outbuildings have been tastefully restored and make an inviting bar and restaurant. The water park, surrounded by palm trees, offers the ideal location to laze in the sun and children. A small mini farm, pony rides playground and other attractions are onsite too. If you want to explore, you can hire a bike to explore the quiet country roads.

The small town of St Just-Luzac is under a mile from the campsite. Nearby Marennes (3 miles) is known as the oyster capital of France and has a safe and sheltered beach, the nearest to the site, and is particularly good for young children. Marennes has a good choice of bars, restaurants and shops.

Le Clos Du Rhone by Sonelia

This 4 star family campsite in France is nestled within a nature park with a wildlife sanctuary with direct access to the beach.

Escale St-Gilles, Bénodet, Brittany, France

One of the best French holiday parks for the seaside. Escale St Gilles is opposite a sandy beach, this French camping site has plenty of fun activities for kids, including a water park, Accommodation comprises of 2 and 3 bedroom mobile homes, sun lodges and serviced pitches. Venture off site to explore the hidden coves and rock pools which adorn this rugged coastline.

Domaine des Ormes in Brittany

A campsite within a 6th century château- why not? Domaine des Ormes has been awarded five red tents by Michelin and is also a member of the Castels Camping group.

The old watermill is now the bar, and the coach house and stables are now the golf club. The pool complex comprises three pools ( including an indoor pool), a water park with slides beside the tree-lined fishing lake, and a covered lagoon-style pool with wave pool. From tennis to horse riding, bicycle hire to pedalo hire, you’ll find something for everyone here.

Le Clarys Plage Campotel, Vendée Region, France

Le Clarys Plage Campotel is a great family and kid friendly place to take the kids in France. Although there are plenty of great onsite facilities, including amazing pools, it is a great location to explore the French countryside, towns and even see the wonderful and very different Puy du Fou Theme Park.

The site is walking distance to a great beach, Plage des Mouettes (10 minutes) and you can hire a bike from the local shop and explore the coastline. Waterslides are on site and evening entertainment. 10 mins walk from the beach.

Another camping alternative for the Vendee is the Village Le Pin Parasol in The Vendee in France.

La Farigoulette in the Verdon Gorges

Located in the village of Saint Laurent du Verdon within a beautiful natural setting, this campsite in France has direct access to a lake and a water sports centre. The pool is heated too! The campsite has large pitches as well as luxury accommodation.

La Croix due Vieux Pont, Berny Rivera, France

La Croix du Vieux Pont Campsite has a variety of accommodation including tree houses, mobile homes, chalets, pitches for tents and camper vans. Facilities include indoor and outdoor swimming pools, fishing, lake sandy beaches and pedaloes, kids’ club, playgrounds, go cart track and more.

Disneyland Paris is only 60 minutes away.

Domain de Léveno Campsite, Pays de la Loire, France

The Village Club camping at Léveno Estate is a 4-star tourist resort located in Guérande, between southern Brittany and the Vendée region, and only minutes away from the ocean and the Atlantic coast. Camping Sol a Gogo, St Hilaire, France

This mobile home campsite is by a sandy beach. Kids can enjoy treasure hunts, a children’s disco, kids’ club and onsite shows.

La Garangeoire, Southern Vendée, France

Eurocamp at La Garangeoire offers the ideal family resort in France for families with a range of ages. There is a range of pools and waterslides to suit all ages and lots of on-site activities to keep the whole family busy.

La Bois Masson Resort, Vendée Region, France

La Bois Masson Siblu Resort in the Vendée region has a range of activities for kids including indoor and outdoor swimming pools, restaurants, shops, kids playground and a kids’ club for children aged 1 to 14 years. Sandy beaches are just a short drive away.

RCN la Bastide en Ardèche

With tents on a calm rivers edge in a beautiful setting, an English-speaking recreation team, heated swimming pool and beach, plenty of water activities. On land, families can enjoy boules, playground, tennis, and a library and more.

Best Campsites In Southern France

Camping Domaine les Angeles, In Cézan

Settled in scenic rolling hills and fields of Gascony, Les Angeles is a wonderful place to kick back and relax.  Stay at your site or meander over to the refreshing swimming pool and patio.  It’s location near the idyllic country village of Cézan where you can explore in peace and quiet away from crowds and tourists makes it the perfect tranquil getaway.

You can set up your tent, camper van, or caravan at one of the lovely 34 campsites.  Or choose to stay at one of the 9 comfortable mobile homes or chalets that sleep between 2 and 6 people. They come with blankets and pillows, but you bring your own sheets.  A drive from Calais will take around 10 hours.

Payrac Les Pins, In Payrac

Like many campsites located in France, Spain, and Portugal, Payrac Les Pins is a Yelloh! Village campsite.  It is settled in the popular Dordogne valley, between the towns of Sarlat and Rocamadour.  Explore the towns and activities in the surrounding area such as the caves of Lascaux, Château de Beynac, Castelnaud-la-Chapelle Castle, and many more attractions.  You’ll drive about 8 hours if coming from Calais.

Spend time at the site where you’ll have access to entertainment and activities for the entire family, and a heated aquatic area with an indoor pool. There are 48 tent pitches to choose from or 66 rental houses ranging from rustic to premium accommodations.  Combine luxury and nature any way you’d like.  

Camping les Rives de l’Ardèche, In Mayres

Nestled along the serene banks of the Ardèche River, this site offers a holiday that you are sure to remember.  The Ardèche Valley is a beautiful place to enjoy swimming, fishing, and barbecuing. Camping les Rives de l’Ardèche also features ping-pong tables, petanque pitches, and games and a playground for the kids.  There are also numerous attractions nearby such as Ray Pic Waterfall, Ventadour Castle, Montlaur Castle, The Devil’s Bridge, and more.

Set up your pitch right on the river or in a more wooded area.  Or you can rent a caravan, which comes complete with a refrigerator, microwave, electric coffee maker, and a gas stove.  The final option is a mobile home which also has its own sink, shower, and kitchen.  There is a grocery store, and snack bar for necessary supplies on site.  You’re approximately 9.5 hours away from Calais by car.

Best Campsites In Northern France

Le Coeur De La Foret, In Pierrefonds

This lovely forest setting will win your family over.  It offers quiet, peaceful, and secluded chalets that are clean and comfortable.  Activities nearby include biking and hiking.  The charming town of Pierrefonds is also within walking distance and has an old castle you can visit. 

The rooms come with a kitchenette, utensils, a microwave, and an electric kettle. All have a relaxing veranda with outdoor furniture for you to use.  Nearby places to visit include Berny-Rivière, Compiègne, Chantilly, and Meaux.  If you’re driving from Calais, it will take about 3.5 hours.

Chateau de lez eaux Normandy

“Chateau de Lez Eaux is a small site with just 229 pitches near the town of St Pair sur Mer and a short drive from Granville.  The nearest airport is Dinard and the recommended port is Cherbourg which is less than 2 hours drive away. Chateau de Lez Eaux offers a good mix of accommodation – mobile homes booked through companies like Eurocamp and camping pitches for tents, chalets or even glamping options. 

One of the biggest draws for us when booking our stay at Chateau de Lez Eaux was the covered water park. The covered water park at Chateau de Lez Eaux features a decent sized pool, a gated splash area for little ones, two super fast slides for over 7s and two big slides accessible to all. Chateau de Lez Eaux has a number of play areas and sports facilities including a dedicated space for football, games nets, some outdoor fitness equipment and two parks. “

Camping Pas de Calais & Château du Gandspette, In Éperlecques

This spacious 11 hectare site offers 199 pitches to choose from that all capture the essence of the natural French countryside, and is only a 30 minute drive from Calais.  It is a 4-star campsite that features a 19th century castle onsite.  When not visiting the castle or nearby town of Saint-Omer, rich with history, head to one or both of the two swimming pools.  There is also an outdoor fitness center, arcade, and a bowling alley for your family to enjoy.

Nicely landscaped pitches are available for caravans, tents, or small motorhomes.  You can bring your pet, but double check before you go because there are some restrictions.  The mobile home accommodations come with a coffee maker, microwave, fridge, oven and utensils.  Each home has its own bathroom with complete with shower and hot water.  

Camping Sites and Landscapes Au Clos de la Chaume, In Corcieux

You will certainly be able to get back to nature at this site nestled in the Ballons des Vosges Natural Park.  Discover magnificent landscapes from winding rivers to impressive mountain views.  Fishing, hiking, biking and mountain biking are all activities you can explore from this location.  Visit the nearby Gérardmer resort, which offers a swimming pool in its covered aquatic area complete with a solarium.

Bring your tent, caravan or motorhome to one of the 94 pitches here.  In July and August, you will wake up to fresh baguettes and croissants each morning of your stay. The village of Corcieux is very close, and you can load up on food and supplies there.  You can also rent mobile homes for up to 6 people, or one of their Cotton Lodge Nature tents.  It will take you around 6 hours to drive from Calais.

Camping Les Saules, In Cheverny

The location of Les Saules is unbeatable since it is in the Loire Valley, home to the castles of Cheverny, Chambord, the Zoo Parc de Beauval. And what better way to explore some of these splendid attractions than by bike or motorcycle?  You can also discover the barefoot path and acrobat nets, or take a canoe trip on the Loire.  If golfing is your thing, head on over to the fantastic course of Cheverny.

Choose from 3 styles of pitches from secluded from road traffic, off the grid, to an option with electricity.  Cute cottages that sleep 4-6 people are available complete with your own outdoor terrace. Some have a kitchen or toilet.  Finally, the “unusual” options give you a lodge tent for your holiday.  Your car ride from Calais will be approximately 5 hours.

Best Campsites On The Beach In France

Camping du Letty, In Bénodet

Enjoy a little piece of paradise at this enchanting 4-star campsite on the Breton-riviera on France’s western coast.  The location is perfect as it has access to the beautiful Le Letty Beach, and is just opposite the stunning Archipel des Glénan (Glénan Islands) and Mer Blanche lagoon.  For added excitement, visit the Aquatic Park.  Or relax at the Leisure Park.  If you’re driving from Calais, expect an almost 8 hour drive.

Choose the Privilege Pitches where you can bring your tent, caravan, or motorhome to a roomy site.  These come complete with access to your own sanitary facilities.  If you’d rather not be around motorhomes, choose the Nature Pitches where you can set up your tent, caravan, or camper, and be one with nature. 

Camping Les Sablons, In Portiragnes

This luxious 5-star campsite could be the dream holiday you’ve been waiting for!  With direct access to the beach, you’ll love all Les Sablons has to offer.  The water park includes 2 heated pools, 5 water slides, and a spa. There are so many entertaining activites for kids such as workshops, beach excursions, and games.  At the activities area, you can participate in volleyball, archery, tennis and more.  You certainly will not be bored!

There are many accommodation choices as well ranging from simple tent pitches to elegant chalets.  Take your pick based on your desire and budget!  All have access to electricity, water and showers, while some have private bathrooms and kitchens inside.  There is a restaurant, bar, supermarket, food trucks and even a bike rental all on site.  A drive from Calais would be nearly 10 hours.

Camping Beach Meneham, In Kerlouan

If your family wants to be one with the water, this is the perfect beachside campsite.   Every campsite allows you access to a spectacular pristine white sand beach!  Featured activities include swimming, hiking, fishing, shore fishing, and exploring the beach.  The facilities also offer a  petanque ground, tennis court, ping-pong table, and playground for the kids.

Kerlouan offers shops, a supermarket, and a bakery, and is only 3 km away so you can get yourselves set up with supplies.  Choose from one 60 pitches for tents or carvans all with access to clean community bathrooms and showers.  Or rent a mobile home or cabin.  The mobile homes have their own kitchen area and bathroom, while the cabins use community facilities.  If you’re driving from Calais, plan on about 7.5 hours.

Camping Sandaya L’Anse du Brick, In Maupertus-sur-Mer

Anse du Brick is located on a sunny, sandy beach in Normandy.  Imagine direct access to the sea right from your campsite 200 m away!  The aquatic area has a covered heated swimming pool with a separate area for young children to swim and play.  There’s even a hydromassage waterfall.

The pitches at Anse du Brick give you many options for the holiday of your dreams.  You can have a view of the sea or private sanitary facilities if you choose.  Consider upgrading to one of the 4-star or premium chalets, lodges or mobile homes for rent, if you want more amenities.  These have kitchens, showers, private bathrooms, and can sleep up to 6 people.  Driving to this lovely site from Calais will take around 5 hours. 

Camping Club Farret Yelloh! Village, In Vias

This Yelloh! Village camping grounds goes above and beyond with its 5-star campsite right on the beach!  You will have access to the heavenly beach in Vias Plage.  It won’t be necessary to Leave Club Farret for your entire stay because there’s plenty to do for the entire family.  There’s the beach club, workshops, kid’s activities, and entertainment in the evenings.  There are also 3 aquatic areas complete with heated pools and an indoor pool with waterslides.

Setting up your tent, your caravan or your camper van is easy here when you have a seaside view or shady palm tree oasis located in two different themed neighborhoods.  Every pitch comes equipped with access to electricity.  If you need more amenities, try renting a tropical cottage surrounded by a lagoon, or a stylish mobile home in one of three themed neighborhoods.  Whatever you choose, paradise is calling!  It will be a long drive if you’re coming from Calais by car, clocking in at almost 11 hours.
