If you ever ask people for advice on travel tech gadgets for family travel, then a tablet or phone downloaded with various apps, games or movies, always come up as suggestions.
Whilst lots of airlines offer inflight entertainment, it varies from airline to airline and from flight to flight. Plus, there is always the chance it could stop working. (As an ex flight attendant, I have had to try and fix this before passengers got irate!)
With this in mind, some back up plans, whether it is some additional travel toys, or bringing your own travel tech gadgets are essential in this day and age.
Here are some of our tech travel must have’s for family travel, which are part of our families packing list, plus a discount code for one of them! Details below!
With some ultra long haul flights under our belt, there is little chance of our tablet lasting 24 hours. Without being able to guarantee there is a working power charging point on a plane, we always bring our own. However, be aware that some airlines like FlyBe, do not allow their use on board! If you do buy one, check it works at home before you try it on your travels.
Blue Tooth Selfie Stick
Yes, I know how silly I look using one, but I am often the one taking pictures of the kids, or my husband and I take turns in taking photos with the kids – but I am rarely in them. A selfie stick means I can take a few precious family snaps quickly, just with my phone.
Extra USB charging cables
These come in so handy, especially if there is a USB charging point on the plane. You could even attach your iXpand Flash drive to it and watch a movie from the plane TV. Plus, you never know when you might need one, or lose one! This is one of the air travel accessories that I usually forget and end up buying as a spare at the airport!
Older planes often have in-seat charging available via a plug socket. Check your airlines website to see if they provide this service. Alternatively, another charging opportunity may arise whilst you are waiting around at the airport or on the train: look for a socket or charging station for your devices. If you already have an adaptor plug in your hand luggage, you won’t miss this opportunity.
iXpand Flash Drive
The iXpand Flash Drive is a tiny, portable bit of travel tech which is only a couple of inches long and is a quick and convenient way to transfer photos and videos from your phone to another device – backing up photos and freeing up storage space on your smartphone. It easily slots over a phone case you may be using to protect your phone too.
As a family who travels a fair bit, the winning feature for us is that you can download and store videos and then just plug it into your phone to watch – without filling up your phones storage or needing WiFi! Not needing WiFi makes this one of my camping must haves as well as a general holiday must have!
I also like the feature of being able to back up all your social media photos too – although you do need a WiFi connection for this part. I have heard of several people losing their Instagram accounts (not good if that is part of your job!) or perhaps you might forget your Facebook password.
Either way, this gives me some peace of mind – especially because I started using Facebook in 2007 and have no idea where the original photos are.
How do I use the iXpand flash drive?
To use, you put one end into your phone charging point and follow the instructions. There is an SanDisk iXpand Drive app which takes you through the easy step by step instructions. (I am not that techie and I found it very user friendly.)
The other end has a USB attachment so you can easily transfer photos and videos to other devices. We found this great to transfer holiday photos from Amsterdam to the grandparents.
Can I use a flash drive with my iPhone?
Yes, you simply pop one end into your phone charging point and follow the instructions. You can back up or transfer photos, files and videos from your phone in seconds and with a few clicks. It is SO easy to use and you can even create folders direct from your phone and organise on the go.
There is a USB attachment on the opposite end, so you can plug into your computer / laptop and transfer later if you want to. You simply open the folder to view files and drag and drop your music, videos, photos, and documents between your computer and the iXpand Flash Drive window.
If you don’t have an iPhone there is also an android version, the Dual Drive USB Type-C device, which has a type C port which works in exactly the same way.
The only potential issue I see with this particular storage device, is that there is no case for protecting it when not in use: so be careful of particularly the USB end and stow it in a safe place in your bag. Or pop it into a ziplock bag. I use them for travelling all the time!
