Review of Country Relais & Spa Le Capanne – A Luxury Villa in Tuscany
I have never been to Tuscany before, well unless you count an unscheduled stop due to a flight cancellation. So I was very excited when Bookings For You invited 13 family travel bloggers (including me) to stay at the beautiful 100 year old Country Relais & Spa Le Capanne luxury villa in Tuscany.
Now you may have read the words “review “and “invited” and jump to the (wrong) conclusion that I’ve been influenced to write a positive review of my stay -regardless of how it actually was. As always my opinions are my own and not influenced in any way. So if you are researching a luxury villa is Tuscany (with private pool), then read on to find out if the Country Relais & Spa Le Capanne is for you.
The location – Volterra, Italy
Le Capanne is located in countryside of Tuscany, adjacent to a Natural Reserve. Located on 100 acres of land, you are tucked away in the incredibly peaceful countryside – with stunning views. The nearest town is about 20 minutes drive away. Honey-coloured Volterra, a picturesque traditional town situated in the province of Pisa, not far from Florence, Siena and the coast.

As you meander through the tranquil Tuscan countryside, you round a corner and there you see it. A beautiful Tuscan villa nestled against the rolling hills. If you stop to listen, you can even hear the waterfall bordering the edge of the property. No mean feat considering the property spans 100 acres.
The nearest airports, Pisa and Florence are approximately 30miles away with direct flights to Pisa from London with British Airways, Easyjet & Ryanair.
The Luxury Villa in Tuscany
The villa has 9 bedrooms set over 2 floors, 7 of which are in the main building, and 2 suites which are attached to the main building but have a separate private entrance. All rooms have ensuite bathrooms and air conditioning/heating. In total, the villa can cater for 22 guests – ideal for multi-generational family holidays to Tuscany or a holiday with friends. (Maria from One Tiny Leap shows her stunning photos of the property here.)
With two dining areas, a welcoming lounge with appealing neutral colours, whites and Tuscan floor tiles throughout, there are plenty of places to gather together as a group. If you have little ones who crawl or toddle, you could block off the stairs with a travel stair gate or perhaps use a piece of furniture to temporarily block access. The authentic Tuscan ambiance shines through with many pieces of furniture belonging to the Giovannini family for generations. The resulting look is a luxury countryside chic with all the modern conveniences. These include:
- indoor jacuzzi
- fully equipped kitchen
- washing machine, iron, ironing board etc ( washing powder is provided.)
- wifi
- satellite TV
- For younger children x2 high chairs and x2 cots
The Giovannis can also arrange for a masseuse, hair dressers and a babysitter should you need.
Outside this luxury Tuscan villa are stunning views of the countryside, including the properties olive trees. Competing for attention is the decent sized swimming pool (unfenced). In warmer months (we visited in March), guests can enjoy eating outside at the large dining table – perhaps from the outdoor pizza oven. Or just sit here and enjoy the view!
During the day, we were busy exploring Volterra, Siena and Florence so the TV didn’t get put on once, nor was there an opportunity to play the board games or read the books dotted around the villa. However, in the evenings we did make use of Spotify on the villa’s Bose speaker via Bluetooth. I can safely say, (without divulging too much) that 13 Mum’s may have indulged in a spot of dancing. It’s a peaceful place where you do not need to worry about disturbing the neighbours or your kids shrieking with delight in the pool and bother other holiday makers. Making it all the more appealing for a friends get together or a family holiday in Tuscany.
The food; Self cater, full board or …
Le Cappane’s hosts Dario and Vera Giovannini, offer a great deal of flexibility. Guests can opt to self cater, have catering on certain days or be fully catered for. A welcome basic hamper is provided with the option to upgrade this if you wish too. Our 4 days was fully catered for (except lunch as we were out exploring) We experienced the Tuscan Mommies dinner – authentic Tuscan food all sourced within 20 minutes of the villa, Pizza Party -freshly made dough with a variety of toppings (including the dessert chocolate and fruit pizza) cooked in the outside pizza oven; and a cooking class by Dario’s mother, Fabiola Giovannini. Fabiola and her husband Giancarlo founded the villa and also run a patisserie in Volterra. Lisa Jane from Travel Loving family share her thoughts and some mouth-watering photos of the food here.
Just mention if you have any dietary requests and they will happily be met. As I write this and pour over photos, I’m salivating again at the feasts that were prepared for us!
Why Villa le Capanne?
The authenticity of the villa, and unassuming laid back chic style make you feel at home. Or at the very least a home away from home. The Giovannini’s are on hand as much or as you little as you want, but believe me, you will want to hear their local recommendations and certainly experience their catering! What shines through is their complete dedication and passion for their family business and ensuring that guests leave with fond memories.
For laid back fun with your family or friends, perhaps a birthday celebration or even a wedding – this villa has all the modern conveniences in the spectacular Tuscan countryside. It is the perfect setting for a relaxing luxury family holiday. And of course having a villa in Tuscany with private pool is a must! Volterra is only 20 minutes away, and Siena about 50 minutes away and Florence just over an hour. Horse-riding and other activities can be organised too. Alternatively, Liv Italy Tours can organise walking tours of nearby Florence, a children’s Treasure Hunt at the Uffizi museum or even a gelato making lesson!
If you are after a relaxing holiday in Tuscany, then this is your place and Karen over at Mini Travellers agrees too.
